In 2025, on the occasion of Pride, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza invites you to discover Diverse Love, a thematic tour made up of 16 works that reveal the LGTBI voices and sensibilities that have been present, albeit invisibilised, in the history of Western art.
Diverse Love proposes the exploration of a hidden history of art, which for centuries has remained silenced or ignored. This account challenges traditional taboos and offers a fresh perspective on how love, identity and affective freedom have been represented in works of art.
The journey spans from the Renaissance to the present day and is structured in two parts. The first part focuses on the great old masters, in whom iconography and biography intertwine to reveal non-normative desires and affections. The second part deals with the social and cultural evolution that has allowed for greater visibility and freedom in the great modern cities.
Among the works and stories featured are emblematic characters such as Saint Sebastian, who became an icon of beauty and desire, and the surprising mythological episode of Hercules at the court of Omphale, an ancestral example of transvestism and diverse sexuality. Likewise, the tour contemplates key moments such as the cultural effervescence of the Parisian Belle Époque, recognised as the European capital of pleasure and LGTBI experimentation, to the harsh shadows imposed during the Nazi occupation.
This itinerary not only invites reflection on the history of art, but also celebrates the diversity, courage and richness of a culture that continues to gain visibility and strength.
Diverse Love is also available for private visits behind closed doors at the museum, offering an exclusive and in-depth experience for those who wish to get to know this innovative and necessary vision.
